Case Study: Redfin
Gauge Design Group recently completed a custom fabricated staircase in the corporate headquarters of Seattle tech and real estate company, Redfin. This three-story circulation stair came to us as a conceptual rendering with highly conflicting architectural and structural details. We were brought in to provide design assistance during the design development phase. A redesign of the staircase was necessary to stay within compliance with modern commercial building codes and structural engineering requirements. We met these conditionals while preserving the architects vision of a Seattle street map balustrade.
The solution we suggested was a hybrid of a glass channel and an HSS. By fabricating a laser cut steel plate and bar stock stringer, we were able to reduce the sectional dimensions of the stringer by 4 inches while minimizing the use of visible hardware. Originally quoted for a 20-week timeline, we executed the project in 11 weeks all while adding substantial scope of work from other trades who were not able to meet the condensed schedule.
The value of design assistance on constructability and timeline was pivotal to the successful completion of this project.
